Somewhere in the distance I could hear Tyler yelling unseemly things at the guy who’d hurt me. Then I heard another voice saying, “Stop it, all of you, or I’ll start shooting.” Buzz?

Next thing Tyler was beside me, my head in his hands.

“Look at me, Polly.”

His anxious face was inches from mine. “OK, ‘m OK,” I mumbled and shifted my eyes to see Buzz, gun in hand and looking like an intrepid hero of old.

“Move back you two,” he said with a wave of the gun.

Tyler turned his face from me and looked at Buzz. “Thank God you managed to get free. I don’t know what we would have done if you hadn’t.”

“I’m afraid you’ve got it all wrong, son.”

“What are we gonna do with them, Boss?” one of our attackers said.

Huh? What was I missing? Buzz was one of the good guys…wasn’t he?

“Put some restraints on him for a start.” Buzz motioned at Tyler and the men moved toward him.

Tyler jumped to his feet, fists clenched at his sides. “Just try it,” he snarled.

“Now son,” the rear admiral spoke, “there’s no sense in resisting. Not that I’ll shoot you…it’s her I’ll shoot and I’m sure you don’t want that.”

Her? I was the only “her” in the room that I could see and I most definitely wasn’t up for getting shot. I focused my thoughts on Tyler and hoped to goodness he felt the same.

“Well, you’ve got me there, Buzz.” My guy, he’s the best. “I don’t know what this is about but why not let Polly go? There’s nothing she can do to hurt you.”

Buzz cocked his head. “Oh, Tyler, I’d expect that from you. You’re your father’s son alright, always the gentleman, but it won’t work. Polly’s not going anywhere, and I’m assuming she couldn’t anyway. After all, you came back, didn’t you? Why?”

Tyler said nothing.

“Hmph,” Buzz sneered. “You were worried about me and just couldn’t leave me behind?“ He gave a derisive sniff. “Nah, most likely the roads were blocked. That’s it, isn’t it? But the more important question is, were you able to get on the phone? Did you call anyone?”

Still Tyler remained silent. This time, Buzz lifted his gun arm to aim directly at my head. I swallowed hard.

“I asked you a question, son.” His voice was slow and soft, and all the more menacing for it. “Were you able to make any phone calls?”

“No,” Tyler snapped. “Now leave her alone.”

“Are you going to cooperate?”

Tyler gave a brief nod.

“I want to hear it!”

“Yes.”

“That wasn’t so hard, was it?” Buzz sounded almost jovial all of a sudden. He certainly blows hot and cold.

Moments later Tyler’s hands were zip-tied behind his back and he was being frog-marched into the front room. Buzz leaned down and hauled me to my feet. I shrugged his hand away, but when I took a step my vision blurred and I lurched into the wall.

“Wait a minute,” I heard Buzz say, “and take a few deep breaths.”

I did as ordered because I
